PREMIERE: Stars in Coma - Destroying the Love

The very first time I ever heard Stars in Coma was back in 2017.  Thanks to Cloudberry Records, who released their "Transformation" single, I was able to preview the lovely little pop track "Revanche".  I've been a big fan ever since!
I was caught off guard and very pleasantly surprised back in December when the Stars in Coma man himself, André, asked if I'd like to premiere a song from his new album here at Ooberus Oblivious!  This is the first Premiere/interview I've done here and I'm extremely excited, especially because this is a very special and wonderful album.

Here's what André has to say about the album:
A lot of stuff was going on in my life during the writing process of Every Evening, the Sunset Crooks its Thumb Across the River. In the midst of the tropical Swedish summer of 2018, my wife and I decided to take a break after a nine-year relationship. Simultaneously, we were busy planning a move to Portugal, so things weren’t exactly stable in our lives.

However, the creative process surrounding this album was relatively easy as the project served as a safe haven from my otherwise tumultuous life at the time. That’s often the tradeoff you’re doing when you’re facing hardships in your life: your personal issues might be weighing you down, but it always comes with an immense charge of creative energy, at least for me. The songs were written fast and chronological as they happened in my life, from the middle of July to October 2018.

Eventually, my wife and I reached some common ground and decided to stick together. Given the turn of events, the album starts off pretty grim but eventually ends up in a more positive and redeeming place. The record, which was recorded in Malmö, Sweden, and Lisbon, Portugal, in a short period of time, is very personal, but the overall theme could universally serve as a document for when a person's life turns upside down for a period of time.

Musically, I didn’t even think of artistic inspirations this time, I just let the songs come to me and used whatever piano, guitar, organ or string sounds I found beautiful and moving at the time of recording. I guess the end result became some sort of modern take on 70's chamber pop. My new adapted town of Lisbon also served as a major source of inspiration in terms of being someplace new, providing me with a new perspective on life in the end.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

After listening to the album for a few weeks, I had a few questions for André:

The album title, "Every Evening, Sunset Crooks its Thumb Across the River", tell us more about that.
The title was inspired by this poem from Corsino Fortes called "Emigrant".  When I moved to Lisbon, Portugal, in the fall of 2018, I read a lot of Portuguese poets, especially Fernando Pessoa, who is very famous here.  And Fortes is from Cap Verde, which used to be a Portuguese colony.  I really like his imagery and the meter is often a bit weird, a bit chopped up.  The title also mixed well with the artwork.

The album art is adorable and one of my favorites across your albums.  Did you make it yourself?  Why the robots??
The artwork was made by Simona Accattatis, an artist from Italy who resides in Lisbon. She has done a lot of street artwork in the city, and one day I just found this piece of robot art on a wall while walking around in one of the old neighborhoods. I instantly visualized this picture of two robots looking over the Tagus river in Lisbon. So I drew this sketch/doodle of my visualization and contacted Simona, who was up for doing the artwork. She actually came really close to the image in my head so I was really happy with the final outcome.

You can hear the progression of emotions from start to finish.  Right in the middle of the album, "Portela 1540" is a heart-wrenching instrumental minute of sadness.  You haven't had many instrumentals in the past.  What's the story behind this one?
The song actually started off as a regular pop song, but I wasn't happy with it in the context of the album flow. The first four songs were recorded while I was still living in Sweden and the rest was made after our move to Lisbon, so I wanted something to represent the arrival to our new country. I didn't wanna write a new song cause I had this idea that the tracklist should follow the order in which I wrote the songs, so I just decided to take some parts of the original idea and pitch them down. It worked very well as this new ambient piece dividing the album in two parts.

It's true that not many instrumentals have made their way on past Stars in Coma albums, but last year I actually made this soundtrack for a audiobook/podcast series by Swedish comedian and author K Svensson, which was almost completely instrumental. It's a fun way to compose if you can frame it for the proper project.

"Stability" is my favorite song on the album, and the lyrics really resonate.  "I need to find a new way to whatever works / I need to find a new way to love you again...I need to love, to love myself again".  Those lines can really be used in so many facets of our lives and there is such a great universality about them.  You mentioned this in your press release, the sort of universal theme that came out in the end.  Was that ever your intention, or did it just reveal itself through the writing/recording?
No, that was never my initial intention, even though those lines probably represent the universal theme the best. I just wanted to cheer myself up and document my personal struggle. In a way it's almost like reading from a diary describing this two or three months of my life. And just as I find comfort listening to the most confessional songs by of Montreal or John Lennon, maybe someone could find comfort in this album as well.

The funny thing is even though I've always been prolific I've never before written such a coherent release this fast before. Last summer, I had basically decided I was done with Stars in Coma, I wanted to do something else, but obviously these turn of events pushed me into creating this album. It sort of ignited my creativity in a new way.

Near the album's end you give us "For the Oblique Minds", an 8-plus minute epic.  You've had plenty of epic pop songs in the past and they're great: "Irregular Frequencies", "Nullified Wall", "Helpless".  This length is a rarity in the indie pop world.  What attracts you to them?
Since I was a kid listening to Iron Maiden I have always been intrigued by lengthy songs with different parts. It's such a challenging but also rewarding way to compose if you can get it right. It's fun to create your own little "Bohemian Rhapsody".  I wrote and recorded the album very fast, from the end of July to the middle of October 2018. From the get go I knew I wanted an epic piece towards the end that summed up the album, but I never planned for it to be over 8 plus minutes, it was just that the different sections of the song wrote itself in a way. It's almost four songs in one, which might be off-putting to some, but I really like it.

Has your wife heard the album?  What are her thoughts?
Yeah she has, but it took me a long time to present it to her, cause obviously I was nervous about her reaction. I think she was nervous about her reaction too. She said it was a very emotional experience, but also understands it's art. It's about her, or about us questioning our relationship, so there's no way of denying that, but at the same time it's just some music that I made. A lot of confessional breakup albums have been written before, I'm not the first. But she has also written some diaries/poems about our breakup, so we've definitely used the technique in dealing with our situation.

This is your 11th album as Stars in Coma!  Are you already thinking of album number 12?
Yes I do! And I have a very clear picture of how it will sound and the general theme. It will also be personal, but from a completely different angle. Of course that could change, I only have like 2-3 songs so far, but right now I know where I wanna go with it.

Last question, and this is just to serve my own fantastical notions.  I've oft dreamt of striking it rich and being able to put on my own Pop Festival here in LA.  I sadly didn't get to see you when you played at NYC Popfest a few years ago.  I've fantasized long and hard about who would be on my Popfest bills (Stars in Coma would of course would be invited!).
Who would be your dream line-up?  Reunions allowed!
It would be an honor to play at your dreamed-up popfest! Well, of course it would be cool play alongside some of my favorite artists from LA such as Weyes Blood or Ariel Pink. My favorite band of Montreal would also be invited of course. It would also be cool if you could convince Kate Bush to play her debut album The Kick Inside in full, but that would probably be harder than to like resurrect Kurt Cobain and reunite Nirvana. :)

Thank you so much for allowing us to premiere your song.  I love the album and can't wait for the world to hear it!

And now, here is the opening track from "Every Everning, Sunset Crooks its Thumb Across the River"... "Destroying the Love":

"Every Everning, Sunset Crooks its Thumb Across the River" will be released on March 29th!

The ABC's of Me - Conclusion - Amanda Lear - My Alphabet

To anyone who came and read/listened, thanks for joining me on this journey down memory lane as I shared many of the songs of my life!  Music is an amazing friend and constant that keeps on giving and giving, through the good times & the bad.

The ABC's of Me - Day 27: Zeigeist - Pressurized Chamber

Day 27 - Z
Zeigeist - Pressurized Chamber
No better way to end this series than with the amazing Zeigeist.
Zeigeist are no longer with us but gave us synth pop perfection in their 2008 album "The Jade Motel".  This track, my fave from the album, was one of my 2008 tracks of the year.  Another one of those tracks that helped through a rough break-up, it will always give me that ooh-ah-ah sensation whenever I hear it.

The ABC's of Me - Day 26: Yo La Tengo - My Little Corner of the World

Day 26 - Y
Yo La Tengo - My Little Corner of the World

It's nice to have a private oasis in life.  Back in college, there was a place that provided a great escape whenever you needed it...the UC Davis Arboretum.  An expansive garden with trails and hidden paths that could take weeks to explore!  Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to the arboretum, to my ginkgo trees (my favorite!), and to just being free in thought and in love.

The ABC's of Me - Day 25: eXposé - Point of No Return

Day 25 - X
eXposé - Point of No Return

Only a little stretch here with the very difficult X!
Exposé is Freestyle!  Freestyle is Exposé!  This song is one of those perfect 80's pop dance numbers that will make it onto any of my party playlists!  Everyone should own a copy of "Exposure"!

The ABC's of Me - Day 24: When in Rome - The Promise

Day 24 - W
When in Rome - The Promise

I was asked once by an 80's music obsessed guy I went on a few dates with to compile my Top 10 80's songs.  It was hard and that list would surely be very different now, other than this song.  This song topped my list and I still feel it is the quintessential 80's pop track.  I always love when I hear it, it's great for dancing AND now to have the connection to my sister and brobro in law...total LOVE!!

The ABC's of Me - Day 23: Violent Vanessa - Blister in the Upside Down Sun

Day 23 - V
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
   AND
Vanessa - Upside Down

That's right!  I make the rules and V is getting TWO artists!!  This is the only time I couldn't tear myself away and just include ONE song!
There is no other song that represents young Ryan better than "Blister in the Sun"!  Violent Femmes self-titled debut was thee album of my adolescence and to this day, is still one of the greatest albums of all-time.
There is no other song that represents the Ryan of today better than Vanessa's "Upside Down"!  A song that exemplifies POP to the highest degree and, as can be seen in this video, doesn't take itself too seriously.  Vanessa is one of my musical Goddesses.

The ABC's of Me - Day 22: Peter Ulrich - Time and a Word

Day 22 - U
Peter Ulrich - Time and a Word

This song was a lullaby for me during college.  I would play it on repeat at bedtime and its gorgeousness would send me to dreamland ever so peacefully.  Taken from Peter Ulrich's debut album "Pathways and Dawns", it is the perfect closing track to the album.  And if you didn't know, Peter Ulrich was an original member of Dead Can Dance!  History lesson!!
Now let's go dream together...

The ABC's of Me - Day 21: Tiny Tim - Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight

Day 21 -  T
Tiny Tim - Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight

This is one of those songs that has always made me extremely happy.  To live life worry and care-free is something to strive for!  Hopefully when I'm old and gray and having a wonderful time!

The ABC's of Me - Day 20: The Shermans - Déjà Vu On Repeat

Day 20 - S
The Shermans - Déjà Vu On Repeat

A song dedicated to all the people in our lives who make it feel as though we've known each other forever.  I've got a few of those in my life and I hope you do too.  It's a special connection.  On top of that, this song is indie pop PERFECTION!

The ABC's of Me - Day 19: The Ronettes - Be My Baby

Day 19 - R
The Ronettes - Be My Baby

One of my fondest childhood memories was a road trip that Sissyboo Crystal and I took with Grandma Mae & Grandpa Ray up to Oregon.  For two weeks or so, we drove, we ate, we laughed (Crystal and I thought my Grandpa asking my Grandpa "You want a drag?" to be the funniest thing ever.)  We got to hang out on a farm, "camp" in a tent, pick fresh veggies, play with farm cats, eat amazing biscuits and just have an all-around awesome time.
It was a long trip and luckily Crys and I had an amazing cassette compilation of Oldies and a battery operated cassette player to get us through!  The compiliation had every imaginable song that your mind conjures up when you hear the word "oldie".    Probably one of the greatest songs ever, this one takes me back to that unforgettable and awesome trip with three of the most amazing people I have ever known.

The ABC's of Me - Day 18: Stacey Q - Two of Hearts

Day 18 - Q
Stacey Q - Two of Hearts

Q is her last name right??  Q and X were the most difficult letters to work out and as ultimate ruler of this series, I can stretch the rules as I see fit!
If you know me, you know I love to dance.  This song is a perfect dance song.  I remember finding this 7" whilst on a trip back up from San Diego with Rockyboo and I was so excited (not that this 7" is all that hard to find!)  Perfect Pop!

The ABC's of Me - Day 17: Pink Martini - Hang on Little Tomato

Day 17:  P
Pink Martini - Hang on Little Tomato

This is another song I found and adored during my night shift work years.  The night that this song struck its most powerful was after a break-up that, of course, felt like the end of the world.  When I worked at night, I was mostly alone, secluded in an office on a nearly abandoned floor.  I played this song on repeat that night for close to two hours.  The message of the song gave me some brightness that night and every time I hear it now, it continues to provide nothing but light.  While I have luckily not had many instances since then to need this song to fight the blues, I know exactly where I'll turn if that day arrives...

The ABC's of Me - Day 16: Ooberman - First Day of the Holidays

Day 16 - O
Ooberman - First Day of the Holidays

What is the perfect song?  Your favorite?  The best?  I can without a doubt always say, for me, it this one.  It embodies all things I love about music.  Heartfelt and beautiful lyrics, bouncy pop, a soft refrain to conclude, and a climactic synth/guitar crescendo that, when I very first heard this song, made me leap into the air out of nowhere.  That moment, and every moment thereafter that I hear this song, fills me with so much love and joy and light and all the happiness in the world.  This song is love.

The ABC's of Me - Day 15: New Buffalo - I've Got You and You've Got Me

Day 15 - N
New Buffalo - I've Got You and You've Got Me
I dedicate this song to all my friends and loved ones.  I used to listen to this track on repeat back when I worked night shift and it was the perfect night shift song.  While I was busy working, I would think of all the fun I was missing and listen to this track to feel closer to all those out in the world.  So all you loves of mine, always remember, I've got you and you've got me.

The ABC's of Me - Day 14: The Magnetic Fields - Take Ecstasy With Me

Day 14 - M
The Magnetic Fields - Take Ecstasy With Me
Stephin Merritt making his final appearance in this series with his most notable band, The Magnetic Fields.  It wasn't long after discovering Future Bible Heroes that I had amassed every other Stephin Merritt release that I could find.  Their 1994 album "Holiday" closes with this perfect slice of synth pop.  The song is as sad as any Merritt has ever written and the music is as close to perfect as it gets.  As I was once almost "beat up just for holding hands", this song has a personal impact I'll never let go.

The ABC's of Me - Day 13: The Lightning Seeds - Pure

Day 13 - L
The Lightning Seeds - Pure
Another song I consider complete perfection, from the lyrics to the music, everything.  One of the definitive pop songs of my early college days and beyond.  This is what a love song sounds like!

"If love's the truth then look no lies
And let me swim around your eyes
 I've found a place I'll never leave
Shut my mouth and just believe
Love is the truth I realize
Not a stream of pretty lies
To use us up and waste our time

 YES!

The ABC's of Me - Day 12: Komeda - It's Alright, Baby

Day 12 - K
Komeda - It's Alright, Baby
KO KO ME ME DA DA!!!  I love this band, I love this song.  It's all just that simple.

"I'm tired of being wasted
I'm so sick of being tired.
Yeah, but sure that love existed
Long before the first word was pronounced."

The ABC's of Me - Day 11: James - Moving On

Day 11:  J
James - Moving On
This song is a beautiful ode to a lost loved one from the ever-awesome James.  The song hits so many of the perfect chords and is a highlight of their recent output.  What always gives me the love sensation and the chills and the tears is this video.  I would have to put this in the category of "my favorite videos of all-time".  It interprets the song so amazingly and if you aren't touched watching this, you aren't human.

The ABC's of Me - Day 10: iamamiwhoami - Chasing Kites

Day 10:  I
iamamiwhoami - Chasing Kites
I was one of the easiest letter choices.  The band name alone made it easy.  I AM - AM I - WHO AM I!  Like Celeste in Vox Lux, "I - I - I - I"!
iamamiwhoami is the undisputed love of my musical life for the 2010 decade.  While there are so many tracks to choose from, I had to choose my 2014 Song of the Year "Chasing Kites"!  True pop perfection and so much of what I need in a song.

The ABC's of Me - Day 9: Heavenly - Space Manatee

Day 9:  H
Heavenly - Space Manatee
The song and band that were my first true introduction to indie/twee pop.  I'm pretty sure it was the song title alone that pulled me in.  MANATEES ARE AWESOME!!!  And Heavenly is awesome!  This track is awesome!

The ABC's of Me - Day 8: Gene - Olympian

Day 8:  G
Gene - Olympian
I will never forget how randomly I discovered Gene.  I was walking through the UC Santa Cruz campus while visiting a friend during our Sophomore year.  As we approached her dorm through the parking lot, I noticed a car with four stickers on the back window:  Depeche Mode, Pulp, Suede and GENE.  I was of course very in love with the first three bands, but who was this fourth unknown artist??  Upon arriving back in Davis, I immediately went to one of the local record shops and found Gene's sophomore album "Drawn to the Deep End".  I was immediately enamored with the album and went right back out and purchased their debut album "Olympian"!  This album was even better and is still one of my favorites.  This track is definitive Gene, with Martin Rossiter's voice soaring above the chamber/brit pop magic!  Definitely one of the most underrated bands of the brit pop era, Gene are still one of the best in my eyes.

The ABC's of Me - Day 7: Future Bible Heroes - She-Devils of the Deep

Day 7:  F
Future Bible Heroes - She-Devils of the Deep
I said earlier that Stephin Merritt would be a prominent presence during this series and here is his 2nd appearance.  This is the first song of Stephin Merritt's that I ever heard.  It was in a car ride from Davis to Sacramento with a friend who obviously had divine music taste.  I immediately ran out and bought the glorious album "Memories of Love" which, in the liner notes, included the message: If you like Future Bibles Heroes, you may also like The Magnetic Fields, The 6ths and The Gothic Archies.  Oh how right that note was, and it has been a mad lover affair ever since!!

The ABC's of Me - Day 6: Echobelly - Ondine

Day 6:  E
Echobelly - Ondine
Simply, this is a song that will always remind of my first love, Johnny.  He took himself away from us too soon and I miss him dearly.  This track is from Echobelly's perfect album "People Are Expensive" (one of my Desert Island Discs) and is a track I've included on a playlist entitled "The Saddest Songs".  Sonya Aurora Madan's voice is one of the most motherly, warm & comforting for me.  She always has a way of hitting me to the core with her delivery.  This song has brought me to tears more than any other.

The ABC's of Me - Day 5: Death by Chocolate - If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out

Day 5:  D
Death by Chocolate - If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out
One of my all-time favorite movies is "Harold and Maude".  This song is the essential theme from the film and a lesson for all of us.  Maude playing this song for the uptight Harold is one of the film's most touching moments.  And when Harold sings the song at the end of the film, utter joy.   I had to choose this cover of the song because it's sweet delivery just speaks more to me. Sing out everyone, sing out!

The ABC's of Me - Day 4: Class Actress - Someone Real

Day 4 - C
Class Actress - Someone Real
Note:  "C" was the most difficult letter to restrict to only one choice!
I had to go with Class Actress' "Someone Real".  When I think back to one of the first, newer artists/songs that Rockyboo and I felt an immediate connection over, it is this one (and her entire excellent "Journal of Ardency" EP!).  We labeled this track as "synth-gaze", which never really took off.  We've seen Class Actress perform multiple times, but sadly not enough.  She is one of our artists and take it from us, this track is AWESOME!!  I love you Rockyboo!!
PS.  Class Actress, release new music!!

The ABC's of Me - Day 3: Broadcast - Come on Let's Go

Day 3 - B
Broadcast - Come on Let's Go
Since its release in 2000, this song has been an all-time favorite and a life anthem.  A beautiful love song, the music is perfect, the vocals are perfect, the lyrics are divine.  "What's the point in wasting time / on people that you'll never know / Come on let's go".  Words to live by.
A band gone too soon, we miss you Trish!

The ABC's of Me - Day 2: Acorn Boys - Walkin' Under Trees

Day 2 - A
Acorn Boys - Walkin' Under Trees
Creating this series, I limited myself to choosing only one song per letter.  "A" was a difficult one.  I chose this track because, thanks to Rockyboo, it will now always remind me of our kitty baby Venus who left us a couple years ago.
Not only that, but this song is two-minutes of sweet perfection.  A true rarity, I had to upload the song myself to the YouTube!

The ABC's of Me - Day 1: The 6ths - Falling Out of Love (With You)

This February I present a special feature series that I've been concocting for the past 6 months or so.
Entitled "The ABC's of Me", every day of the month will be highlighted by a band who will represent each of the letters of the alphabet (and a number)!   While I did have to make a couple stretches to the rules I made for myself, I hope you enjoy and gain a little more insight into me as a person and as a music lover!  These songs are all very special to me.

Day 1 - Number
The 6ths - Falling Out of Love (With You)
Stephin Merritt will be the most present artist throughout this series, but that should come as no surprise given his rather prolific career and my deep love of his music.  His work with The 6ths is amazing.  He created two albums in which he invited some his favorite vocalists to sing songs of his creation.  Brilliant idea and brilliant results as evidenced by this perfect slice of POP featuring Dean Wareham.
This lyric has always been a standout for me:

They made sounds just like drums /
I was young, you were dumb /
Now you're older and I'm wiser /
We design synthesizers
