Cicada 'Come Together' by cicadamusic

2011 - The Concerts

While it's hard to put a tag on awesome live music, I shall do so now with my BEST CONCERTS of 2011!!!

10. The Cure - Pantages (Night 3 of Reflections)
9. Charo - Haugh Performing Arts Center
8. CSS (x2!) - Culture Collide Festival
7. Portishead - Shrine Auditorium
6. The Presets - Club NOKIA
5. OMD - Club NOKIA
4. Robyn / Röyksopp - Hollywood Bowl
3. Ladytron - The Wiltern
2. PULP - Wireless Festival, Hyde Park
1. Erasure - Palladium

The most amazing live experience I had this year was seeing "Common People" (PULP) live in London. While the setlist left plenty to be desired and the crowd was full of rowdy drunk punks, when "Common People" started everything changed and that entire field was in unison and it was simply amazing. I got chills, I cried a little...I was so incredibly happy in that moment. I will never forget it.

This video doesn't do it justice, but you get the point...

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Advent Calendar - Theoretical Girl

This is my new favourite holiday tradition: Theoretical Girl's Advent Calendar! She releases one new cover song every day in December until Christmas! 2011's first cover is "Wicked Game" and oh it is lovely!

Monday, November 14, 2011

Josie Cotton

"Johnny Are You Queer?"...seriously, that's where I thought it all ended for Josie Cotton. But lo and behold, she is still actively making music to this day!! This is a gem we discovered at bowling tonight via our favourite bowling vee-jay, St. Patrick! It is taken from Josie's 2010 album "Pussycat Babylon". If this track is any indication, I may just be loving this album by the weekend!

Ice Choir

Kurt from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart & The Depreciation Guild has a new band, Ice Choir!!! Chilly synth love! I guess they have an album due next year, but for now we get a near perfect slice of the cake with a 7" single "Two Rings b/w The Ice Choir" co-released via Shelflife & Yesboyicecream Records.
Here is the video for Two Rings:

CLIENT

I need to complete the triangle...yes...the best of the three bands posted today, CLIENT!!

Dubstar

Well, now I've got the fever, the Dubstar fever! They are reuniting!!

"Fast forward to summer 2011 and a little older, a little bigger and hopefully not too clever…we have been writing and recording together again and have amassed a large amount of new material. We are currently at the mixing stage; it always seems to be the last lap that takes the longest, but I think the results will be worth the wait. We can't wait to get out and play it all live too.

Once the songs are ready we’ll put up some previews for fans because we know you have been waiting a long time for this and really appreciate your patience.
- Sarah Blackwood of Dubstar
"

This song will never get old...

Technique

Before the ever amazing CLIENT was formed, there was Technique. How did I just find out about this last year? I don't know, but here is one fantastic pop song by Technique, from their only album "Pop Philosophy":

Of course, the lead singer of Technique, Xan Tyler, is replacing Sarah who officially left CLIENT during the summer (very sad!). But, maybe Dubstar can now reunite! Woooo!!

Lederhosen Lucil

I just discovered Lederhosen Lucil last month whilst riding into work with Agent Sexy Buns. The song "You Suck" made me instantly fall in love with it's very simple Casio beats and lovely lyrics like "I can't believe I did the nasty with your willy" or "'Cause a necrophiliac wouldn't touch your little crusty bone"...heyyyyyy!! How can you not love? She reminds me quite a bit of Stereo Total. Lucil has since dropped the nickname, opting to use her birth name Krista Muir. I will listen to her soon, but I'm loving my Lucil now! Here's the only video I can find, taken from her "Tales from the Pantry" album, and it's delicious:

While that video is awesome, it doesn't really capture the fun bouncy pop that is the bulk of her music...this not so great quality live video is pretty damn great:

Pleasure - Out of Love

More Pleasure!!! I already gave you the ballad, now I give you the dance!!

Boo Shuffle

The ever awesome Pipettes have a fantastic new song/video combo to share with us! I was just practicing my Boo Shuffle and oooh it's fun! The single will be released via Fortuna Pop very soon!

Back to You

Never ending perfection & beauty. Brett Anderson singing the beautiful "Back to You" via Fred Ball's awesome project, Pleasure. One of my Top 5 songs of 2007.

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Molly Nilsson - Skybound

Molly Nilsson, again! Yes, her new album now has a title AND a release date...those are "History" and December 14, 2011!! So exciting. She plays Los Angeles on Nov 18 at Katzen Kultur Klub...we must all go!! Love!

I'm Not Madonna

Just bloody fucking brilliance...Hi-Fashion has an EP out "Sprechen Sie Hi Fashion?" and I will have it! You can buy the physical CD here!!!!

You can hear the entire aforementioned EP (which contains "I'm Not Madonna") at their soundcloud page.
They also have their debut EP "Issue #1" streaming at their website.

Other People's Children

The ever busy Jason Sweeney is the topic of today. I did a random search on Spotify Monday night for one of his many bands, Other People's Children, and was delighted to see they had a whole album there!
Here's one of their 7" singles, which is quite representative of their sound:

Jason has a whole bunch of other projects (School of Two is another super favorite) and you can listen to a few here at his newish label site...Significant Others.

The Polyamorous Affair

And a little more synth pop magic! Some pretty epic videos, especially "Softer and Softer" (like an innocent baby wallaby)... All three of their albums are fantastic and must be heard now! Awesome find Steven!!

The Revillos - Where's the Boy for Me?

And a little something to cheer us back up...

Piano Magic - Disaffected

A lovely sentiment to start the work week:

"Anything can happen in life
Especially nothing, mainly nothing
Once you know that, you're fine
Once you know that, you can retire
Set your clock by your heart
Work's overrated and it will kill you..."

Coming to America?

Molly Nilsson is! She's plotted out dates for her first ever US tour in November and I am completely overjoyed by this! Nov 18, she stops by Los Angeles. No venue as of yet, but mark and reserve your calendar space! Also, her new as-of-yet-untitled album is now set for release in December...yayyyyy!!!

Here's a video from her just released from her 2010 album "Follow the Light":

and here's the song I first heard of Molly's that made me fall in love, from her debut album "These Things Take Time":

The Golden Filter - Shake!

That's right, this track will make you shake! The second track we get to hear from the released-this-week new soundtrack "Syndromes" by my loves The Golden Filter! It's wild, it's frantic, it's shake your tribal booty goodness...

Thank you to The Man of a Million Newsletters, Missy Chrissy Phillips for the tip off!

TYP

The Young Professionals! Gay magic disco pop!! Their debut album "09:00 to 17:00, 17:00 to Whenever" was released a couple weeks ago, and it should be pretty huge! Catchy as all hell...I must have it! This is why...

I've had a crush on Ivri Lider (one half of TYP's core) ever since hearing his rendition of "Song to the Siren". This is taken from the heartbreaking film "The Bubble" which I highly recommend.

J'aime

J'aime (Jaime Cristóbal) from Ooberus-favourite Souvenir has just released his debut EP "My Cigarettes" on the awesome Spanish label Jabalina. The EP is part of Jabalina's Love Song series which has featured most of the Jabalina family, including Klaus & Kinski, yum! This wasn't out yet during my short time in Spain so someone needs to buy it for me since I refuse to pay for their psycho shipping prices!

Here is the debut video...delight!

Computer Magic - Running

Thank you to my sissymiss Crys for introducing me to such lovely music. Computer Magic is from Brooklyn, just like my sissymiss now. Divine synthpop. She has a few digital EPs out, but they have a high rate of repetition among their tracks. There is also the newest, and most impressive, "Electronic Fences" EP which was released on 12" vinyl! Hopefully we'll get an album soon!

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Geoffrey O'Connor

Geoffrey O'Connor of Crayon Fields fame is set to release his solo debut (Vanity Is Forever) under his own name (he has previously released solo work under the moniker Sly Hats). Here is the first taste from his new album, and oooooh it's delicious!

Sidenote: Geoffrey is opening for Jens Lekman this Wednesday at Hollywood Forever! I've never been able to make a Crayon Fields show in LA, so this will do just fine! Oh how excited am I!!! Hopefully he will have his new album in hand, just for me!

Amanaemonesia

Elysian Fields - Red Riding Hood

Oooh oooh, Elysian Fields video!! "Last Night on Earth" is their new album and it houses this fantastic little direct interpretation of "Red Riding Hood", with just a little bit more sexy... Buy their album!!

Friday, September 16, 2011

The Dears...

and teddy bears! This was intended for yesterday. One of the most heartbreaking videos I have ever seen...makes tears well up in my eyes EVERY time I watch it.
I think the only thing that would have made it better was if it was expanded to match the song's original 6-minute length. The rousing emotional instrumental climax that concludes the original version is stripped for this more "radio-friendly" version. Either way, this song is still amazing, and this video...ayyyy...tissue please!

*Taken from one of my TWO 2003 Albums of the Year, the fantastic masterpiece and desert island disc, "No Cities Left".

Teddybears - Costumes & Lasers!!

TONIGHT @ Echoplex!!! Plus, Teddybears are very cute, so let the day of cuteness continue!!! Much love to this creepy vid from their newest album:

And in case you missed it, Robyn w/ Teddybears on David Letterman! AWESOMENESS!!

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Muppet Babies!

There isn't much cuter than these Muppet Babies! This is my all-time favourite song from The Muppets...and the slide scene at the end of this video is absolutely hilarious!!!

The Day of Cuteness!!

I've just now dubbed today "The Day of Cuteness", for no reason in particular! Here's the bestest song from my favourite album of 2005, The Boy Least Likely To's "The Best Party Ever". Through all the cuteness though, this song & accompanying video still find a way to be heartwarmingly heartbreaking! I love you Boy Least Likely To!!!!

The Perfect Combination

sweetness & light!! Horse Shoes is fronted by the prolific Jacob Graham, who is also a member of Acorn Boys, The Drums, Flashlight Party, etc etc. This song is reminiscent of my favourite song of 2009, Acorn Boys' "Walkin' Under Trees" (which is sadly NOT on youtube). One day I will make that happen, but for now...melt:

2005 - Yann Tiersen / Strip Squad

Way back in 2005, these were my two favourite songs! And oh so different! I don't think I've ever heard anything more beautiful from Yann Tiersen...Liz Fraser takes it to such amazing places!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
oh Strip Squad, how I miss you...Perfect indie pop, that's all. "This is for the singles choir..."

Regina

Oh how I love thee Finland, for giving us the beauty that is Regina. Their new album "Soita Mulle" was released just last week and upon listening to it for the first time last night, I was instantly in love. They've drifted from their more synth-driven sound to focus more on guitar-driven airy pop...but, the synths are still there and the dreaminess (very preminent on their last release) is ever-present. This album is yet another great success for the band who continues to impress on their ascension up my ladder of musical love!
This song blew my mind last night. BEAUTY!!

Now let's show some love for this lovely video / song from their last album "Puutarhatrilogia"...

The soundtrack is to be released in October on limited vinyl & in November on CD! I WANT IT ALL!!!!

Here is the trailer for the very interesting looking little film featuring "Mother"...she has a Furby!!!

The Sound of Arrows - M.A.G.I.C.

Well, this is one of the most slowly developing debut albums I've been anticipating...it was originally due in Sept'09, but now seems to be released either late this year or early next...I still can't tell. No matter, The Sound of Arrows are AWESOME!! Such joy and MAGIC in their music. And here, they present to us an old ditty with a little more glimmer and a superb epic video to go along with it! This is a sure-fire contender for Video of the Year. I present to you, The Sound of Arrows - "Magic"...

Looks like "Magic" is being released as a digital single through GEFFEN (???)...wow!

Tell It To My Heart

This is so old, but I just came across it...so it's NEW to me. And it's lovely! Girl Crisis is an all-girl cover super-group, featuring none other than Class Actress' inDIeVA, Elizabeth Harper!!! And what awesome song are they covering?? Super DIVA Taylor Dayne's "Tell It to My Heart"!! Oh the magic!

You can read the full post about this over at Stereogum.

Also, my deepest apologies for not posting anything in so long...I am back now!! And what the hell...since nothing can ever be better than the original (unless PLNB & The Pre-Chewed Food decide to cover it):

I totally thought "." and the live "in concert" were the conclusion to Jonna Lee's amazing side-project iamamiwhoami, but I was ever so wrong and this is just another amazing song in their ever-expanding amazingness!!!

Love.

The "From Lips Divine EP" is digitally released tomorrow, April 18, and features a handful of remixes of the title track.

inDIeVA Alert - Emmon!!

The return of Emmon is here!!! Yes, Swedish, Yes, Electropop, Yes, deliciousness!!! This is the lead-off single from her upcoming 3rd album "Nomme" due May 25 via the lovely Wonderland Records. I fell in love with the song after just 7 seconds. Video is pretty damn awesome too. DANCE!

Husky Rescue

Back in the early days of this blog and well before I became obsessed with posting videos, I wrote about Husky Rescue (you can read that here). Now that I am obsessed with videos and since over the weekend I just saw this superb video for the first time...Husky Rescue gets to join the multi-post ranks of iamamiwhoami, Little Majorette, and New Young Pony Club! You go Husky Rescue!

Track taken from their superb 2010 album "Ship of Light".

Brite Futures - Sophisticated Side Ponytail

I wanna go to the Mall and where a sideways ponytail...oh yes...the sophistication... Oh, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head...who I just discovered changed their name to Brite Futures made this 3 minute gem of blissful magic sugar electropop. It's heaven on record, it was heaven live when we saw them open for CSS...it's heaven still...

Souvenir - Dance It Away

"Dance It Away" is one of my fave tracks off the new Souvenir album "Travelogues" released in February on the fab Spanish label Jabalina. I absolutely love it when this happens to me:

Calm of Zero

Oh sweet heavenly bliss. Calm of Zero is the new project of former Echobelly bandmates, lead singer Sonya Aurora Madan and guitarist Glenn Johansson. Sonya has always been my favorite female vocalist and it's so nice to hear through these new bare arrangements that that has not changed. These are some beauties. It's also great to hear a new version of the Echobelly classic "Dark Therapy".

Enjoy the full "Acoustic Sessions 1" EP below and let's hope for a full album soon!

Stars in Coma - Prototype Paradise

A new freE-P from Swedish indie darling Stars in Coma! He has a new album due out very soon. It's called "Midnight Puzzle" and will be released on the lovely newish Italian label Kingem Records. Note for future trivia game shows: I have the distinct honor of being their first ever customer from the US!

Saturday, March 5, 2011

Margaret Berger - InDIeVA Alert!!!

One of my favourite inDIeVA's is back! Margaret Berger from Norway! She's taken quite a long break since releasing her very very fantastic pop masterpiece "Pretty Scary Silver Fairy".

Here's the brand spankin' new video for her first new single in FIVE years, "In a Box"! So excited!!

There's a live acoustic version here...beautiful!!

The Lovely Eggs

I'm quite fond of this playful little ditty by The Lovely Eggs. Definitely not for everyone and even I didn't quite like them when I first heard them, but their fun ways have won me over. It's been stuck in my head since Friday. The song below is from their debut album "If You Were Fruit". They just released a new album called "Cob Dominos" on Cherryade Records. We must check it out!

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Little Majorette - Overflow

Pop pop pop perfection! That's how I describe Little Majorette's new single from their forthcoming debut album "Rifle Heart" (due in April). Definitely one of my most anticipated releases for the year. The video is pretty mediocre, but I fucking love this song!!!

Monday, January 31, 2011

El Rey del Mambo y la Reina de Saba

One last Spanish beauty to close out January...

Klaus & Kinski are my current favourite band out of Spain (also holders of my #4 album of 2010 "Tierra, trágalos") and even though I rarely know what they are singing, it rarely matters. This is all-around beautiful...

La Casa Azul - Todas tus amigas

¡Mas español! This video is a trip! What are those girls on?! I'll tell you, a disco pop high!!!
La Casa Azul has a new album ("La Polinesia meridional") coming out this year on Elefant! I can't wait!!! Disco Flamenco!!!

Saturday, January 29, 2011

Zipper

I love when bands write such perfect pop nuggets that even our slight language barrier can't stand in the way...

I love the color. I love the lead singer. I love the weePOP! records sticker on the guitar! This is the title track from an EP released on Elefant Records in the later part of last year.

Monday, January 24, 2011

Shrag - Talk to the Left!

'Cos you ain't right!! This is pretty old now (4-5 years) and I remember first hearing it at SF Popfest in 2009...I just couldn't resist... I present...SHRAG!

ps. They released a new album last year "Life! Death! Prizes!".

Friday, January 14, 2011

Selebrities

I love love love this cover!! I also love love love the 80s magic happening in this video!!

Selebrities hail from Ft. Lauderdale but now reside in Brooklyn, not surprising...You can download their debut EP "Ladies Man Effect" from the lovely upstart label Cascine. Follow this link and just throw 'em your e-mail address. Definitely a fair trade for some lovely tunes!

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Shine 2009 - Higher

Well, isn't this fun?...

Released on new label Cascine with some other joys like World Tour & Selebrities...I must investigate!

First, they were good for your face, now they're also great for your ears... Cosmetics hail from Canada and they are so lovely...hints of Siouxsie, hints of Class Actress, hints of Client...mmmmmmmm...They have two 7" singles (one for each song below) and both have lovely b-sides. Jarvis the Guest

Not sure who these folks are but they were wise enough to utilize the silky smooth voice of pop god JARVIS!! Good song! (I quote directly from the vimeo page below)

"Britpop legend Jarvis Cocker lends his signature vocals to "Synchronize," the kickoff single from Discodeine's first full-length album out February 14th on Dirty / Pschent."
Dir. JF Julian
Synchronize is available on iTunes
http://itunes.apple.com/fr/album/synchronize-ep/id403300514
"DISCODEINE is one of the most anticipated duos, the brainchild of two musical producers to haunt our collective conscious in recent years: Pilooski, an already well-known fixture amongst the Parisian music scene (best known for his “dirty edits” series and his collaborations and remixes for LCD soundsystem, Jarvis Cocker, Iggy pop, Brian Ferry, Nina Simone...) and Pentile, an equally respected musician/producer in his own right (and until now best known for his involvement with Octet and France Copeland)."
